May 23rd - The local and European elections are in full swing now and are keeping us all very busy. As the Regional Chair for the North West I was in Stockport on May 12h for the Offical launch of the NW European campaign and the start of our battlebus tour of the region.
On Monday 17th May I joined Lib Dem Leader Charles Kennedy for a visit to Stockport and Manchester where he met local candidates and campaigners.
The following night, Tuesday May 18th, I was back in Manchester for an election rally in Longsight with Asian members of the local community and Sajjad Karim, our No 2 candidate on the European list, a very upbeat and positive evening.
On Thursday we had a visitor arrive in Knowsley, Martin Borges, Chariman of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) in the German town of Moers, Knowsley's twin town.
Martin was lucky enough to meet Charles Kennedy on Friday May 21st when he paid another visit to the region, this time meeting members and candidates in Liverpool.
Martin also managed to spend a few hours delivering leaflets with colleagues in Huyton and Halewood before returning to Germany on Sunday!
Apologies for not keeping my diary updated more regularly, it has been a hectic few days of late, but that's elections for you!
Remember if you wish to contact me on any issue email me at dave.smithson@knowsley.gov.uk or visit our web site for more information on Knowsley South Lib Dems at www.knowsleysouthlibdems.co.uk

May 10th - Apologies if you are missing my updates! Very busy with preparations for the local elections on June 10th which probably means I need to include an imprint in this message to satisfy election law!!
Have two Personnel Appeals Committee meetings this week but for obvious confidentiality reasons I cannot say more about that!
The normal cycle of council meetings has all but come to an end for the election period although Halewood Town council will be holding its annual meeting on Thursday May 13th at Hollies Hall starting at 7.30pm.

May 3rd - 5th - taking a couple of days off to recharge the batteries before the final push to June 10th. Visit to Liverpool by Lib Dem leader Charles Kennedy MP on Thursday when I get back, will be meeting him when he arrives at John Lennon airport in my role as North West Regional Chair.
May 2nd - Visited Eddie Robb in Page Moss to give him a hand, Eddie is a former Labour councillor who has seen the light!! A well known and popular member of his community, Eddie will be a valuable addition to our team if as we expect he wins in Page Moss.
May 1st - Busy helping colleagues in St Gabriel's ward deliver leaflets, sorting out the final list of candidates for June 10th.
April 30th - At last the CCTV camera promised for Okell Drive has arrived but more problems when contractors turn up to install a new barrier that will only make matters worse!! Managed to get the work suspended until alternative schemes are brought forward for consideration. At least the camera will help tackle the anti-social behaviour problems in the area.
Attended a dinner in the evening where Cllr Mike Storey, Leader of Liverpool City Council was guest speaker, very entertaining!

April 29th - New figures from the Government show that despite some good progress with employment in Knowsley the Borough is still top of the deprevation tables, even with millions of pounds pouring in, makes you wonder where it has all gone! It is vital we use the European and other funding to good effect, we need to tackle youth unemployment which has remained static at over 60% for 16-18 year olds for the last three years.
April 28th - Not much happening at the Council as we start to get ready for the elections, nomination papers are now available and we are busy preparing more leaflets.
April 27th - Still in London on business and bad weather meant my return was delayed so Cllr Sarah Smithson had to do the surgery at The Hollies on her own. More questions regarding the proposed Doctor's surgery in Hollies Road and a neighbour dispute to try and help resolve, always difficult.
April 26th - In London on business but tried to catch up with one of the planning officers by phone to talk about an enforcement problem.
April 25th - A day off!!
Saturday April 24th - Surgery at The Dales, not many visitors, issues raised included benefits concerns and anti-social behaviour again! All quiet on Okell Drive this weekend though.
