April 5th - Attended a meeting organised by the Office of The Deputy Prime Minister at the Marriott Hotel in Liverpool to hear views from local people in relation to the proposed powers for an Elected Regional Assembly. Local Government Minister Rt Hon Nick Raynsford MP spoke for ODPM and took questions from various interested parties.

I asked the Minister if the Government would listen to the views and concerns regarding the powers being made available in areas such as Transport, Learning and Skills Councils and the Environment and that those powers needed strengthening before the Draft Powers Bill was published in July. I pointed out that those opposed to an Assembly would capitalise on the lack of powers in these areas if the Government did not address them before July.
