One for the road?
Friday 6th January 2006 - So after all the speculation and gossip the press have finally got their man and forced Charles to go public with his drink problem.
I, like many others, have continued to back and support Charles Kennedy 100% despite the rumours flying around for some months now and still beleive despite his problems he has done a terrific job for this Party and we have reached record numbers of MP's on his watch.
However, like many others I also understand why so many of his front bench team wanted him to address this issue if we are to maximise the potential and opportunity and put pressure on him privately to deal with it.
These were very genuine concerns raised in the best interests of the Party and done so in private away from the glare of the media.
Unfortunately others who claim to be supportive have not tried to address the issue in such a constructive manner but instead resorted to sinister duplicitous unattributed press briefings, that is the real disappointment for me and a lot of party members will not know who is behind it.
Can Charles survive this intense period of close personal media scrutiny and continue as Leader? Well I guess that is a question only the Party members can answer, if someone else steps up to the plate and puts themselves forward for the post, and I rather suspect if they do it will lead to a lot of soul searching by many people.
Watch this space.
